A-Boards & A-Frame Signs

An A-frame sign is a portable freestanding display with two sides that open into an A-shaped structure when viewed from the side.

A-board and A-frame are commonly used for the same general type of sign. The term sandwich board is also sometimes used, although it can describe other portable sign formats as well.

A-frames are commonly used outside shops, cafes, restaurants, venues and other business premises for posters, menus, promotions and branded messages.

Requirements depend on where the A-board is positioned, the local authority and the part of the UK in which it is used.

If you plan to place an advertising sign on a public road or pavement, check with the relevant council before use. A pavement or street display licence, written permission or another local authorisation may be required.

Advertisement consent is a separate consideration and can depend on the sign, location and how it is displayed. Make sure the A-board does not create an obstruction or safety hazard, and check the current requirements with the relevant local authority.

Many poster A-boards use front-opening snap frames that allow the poster to be changed without dismantling the sign.

Open the frame edges, remove the protective poster cover where fitted, replace the poster, reposition the cover and close the frame securely.

The exact mechanism varies by product, so follow the instructions for your chosen A-board.

Many A-boards are designed for outdoor promotional use, but weather suitability varies by model.

Poster frames, chalkboards, printed-panel systems, water-base signs and digital displays have different construction and weather ratings. Some products may be better suited to sheltered locations than exposed areas.

Check the individual product instructions for outdoor use, weighting and weather guidance. Bring the sign indoors during severe weather or whenever conditions exceed the guidance for your chosen model.

A-boards provide a portable way to display information close to your premises without requiring a permanent sign installation.

Depending on the model, you can choose replaceable posters, handwritten chalkboard messages, permanent printed graphics or digital content. Many models are double-sided, allowing the message to be viewed from either direction.

Artwork requirements depend on the type of A-board.

Custom printed panels and posters require artwork prepared to the correct size, while chalkboard models do not require printed graphics. Digital displays use electronic content rather than conventional printed artwork.
